HMRC have stopped sending paper copies of clients’ Income Tax statements of account to their agents (accountants). Although not common, there have been situations in the past where statements of account have been amended, sometimes incorrectly, with amounts that do not correspond with the tax return submitted and HMRC have not advised the taxpayer or their agent of the changes.
Using the HMRC website, we are able to obtain statement of account details if clients have provided HMRC the normal authorisation for us to act for them. However, there has been a problem with the HMRC website as the system doesn’t always show the latest statement of account that has been sent to a client.
If the underpayments/overpayments of tax shown on the statement of account (arising from the submitted tax return) do not correspond with amounts advised by us then it is important that clients provide us with the statement of account so that we can clarify any differences with HMRC and correct if necessary.
Please contact us if you have any questions.
